What is the IMAT?

The IMAT is a single-shot test designed to assess your academic preparedness for a medical program in Italy. It evaluates your knowledge in various scientific disciplines, critical thinking abilities, and general understanding.

What to Expect on Test Day
  • Test format: 60 multiple-choice questions with five answer options for each.
  • Test duration: 100 minutes.
  • Subjects covered:
    • Biology (23 questions)
    • Chemistry (15 questions)
    • Physics & Mathematics (13 questions)
    • Reading comprehension & General Knowledge (4 questions)
Understanding the Scoring System
  • Each correct answer: +1.5 points
  • Each wrong answer: -0.4 points (There’s no penalty for omitted questions)
  • Maximum score: 90 points
Strategic answering is key! With a penalty for wrong answers, it’s important to only choose an answer you’re confident about. Don’t be afraid to leave a question blank if you’re unsure.
Mastering the Material
The IMAT covers a broad range of scientific topics. We recommend focusing on these areas within each subject:
  • Biology: Cell biology, genetics, human anatomy & physiology.
  • Chemistry: General chemistry principles, organic chemistry, biochemistry.
